Orthopaedic Self-Assessment Exams for AAOS

Every 3 years, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons releases a 9-exam series, 3 per year, of self-assessment examinations for purchase. For this series, DaVinci's Vitruvian Man illustration was used as the main theme for all nine. Each yearly release consisted of 3 exam books, each on a different area of orthopaedic study, along with matching answer books and a DVD that included additional audio-visual material for that year's three exams. All nine covers were kept unique by creative cropping of the illustration to highlight that exam's particular area of emphasis. For the pediatric exam, an illustrator was commissioned to create a juvenile version in a similar style—the Vitruvian Boy.

A companion direct-mail piece with a similar theme was developed to announce the release of the new 9-exam cycle.
